Go from the enchanting city of Chiang Mai to the surrounding mountains and deep jungle to meet tribes, ride elephants, visit religious shrines, and explore deep caves while sleeping in atmospheric hotels along the way. This trip combines Thailand’s history, mountains and beach for an unbeatable adventure. When you’re relaxing on Phuket’s white sands at the end you’ll need to pinch yourself to believe what you’ve just experienced.

DAY 01 Chiang Mai

A driver will collect you from Chiang Mai airport and transfer you to your hotel. Welcome to Chiang Mai.

DAY 02 Chiang Mai (B/D)

Today you’ll visit Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, Chiang Mai’s most famous landmark. Spend a morning exploring the temple’s holy shrines, pagodas, bells, religious icons and statues depicting legends of elephants, snakes and more.

A visit to the nearby handicraft village comes next, where skills handed down from generation to generation produce traditional handicrafts. This evening you’ll be treated to an authentic Khantoke dinner accompanied by Northern Thai dances.

DAY 03 Zip-lining through the forest (B/L)

Head up into the mountains to Mae Kam Pong village, 1,300 meters above sea level. Take a walk through picturesque evergreen forest, along streams and waterfalls.

After lunch in the forest, gear up for your exhilarating 3 hour rain-forest tree canopy journey. This is the pinnacle of forest exploration: soar through canopy of giant 1500 year-old rainforest trees using an ingenious 2km-long system of platforms, tree houses and sky bridges. Look out for monkeys and the 200 species of birds found here while you whistle through the air. Talk about exhilarating.

Afterwards, you’ll be transferred back to your Chiang Mai hotel.

DAY 04 Chiang Mai – Wat Chan (B)

Experience a true local morning today at the bustling Mae Malai Market, where local Thai people trade their goods. Then, you’ll continue into the mountains to Baan Wat Chan, which has been home to the Karen Hill Tribe people for over a century.

Deep in the forest lies Karen Lodge, completely surrounded by nature with no buildings or roads in sight. Spend this afternoon exploring the pristine nature of rice fields, hills and rivers around the Lodge, to the sound of indigenous birds calling. Cool off in the crystal clear mountain streams, and relax on the riverside beach surrounded by forest-clad mountains.

Dinner is served at the Lodge restaurant this evening, accompanied by a tribal performance of dancing, story-telling and music from locally-built instruments of the proud young hill tribe people. End the evening chatting by the log fire before drifting off in your private wooden chalet.

DAY 05 Wat Chan (B/L/D)

After a hearty lodge breakfast, you’ll trek through the jungle for three hours along mountains and streams to the elephant camp. Learn about the jungle plants and nibble on the fruit which your guide points out along the way, before a picnic lunch by the elephants.

This afternoon you’ll meet your elephant, clamber aboard, and take a scenic ride through the mountains and along streams. Feel the sway of the giant mammal beneath you as you explore untouched pine forest. Afterwards, a short hike will take you back to the Karen Hill tribe village, where a BBQ awaits you for dinner.

DAY 06 Wat Chan (B/L/D)

A short trek this morning will take you into a clearing where the Karen Hill Tribe people will welcome you with an ancient ceremony.

Spend the day observing and joining in the daily life of the tribes people, who have survived for centuries without modern technology. Try your hand at fishing, rice pounding and weaving, before hopping aboard a local truck to Baan Sao Dang, to do the same with a Lisu hill tribe.

Next, stop at the Royal Project Baan Sao Duang, where indigenous and non-indigenous plants are cultivated, and delicious coffee is grown. Tuck into a picnic lunch, sip some coffee and head back to the lodge for a cooking lesson using locally-grown ingredients. Fresh forest mushroom soup, anyone?

DAY 07 Wat Chan – Pai (B)

Start the day with a scenic drive through emerald green forests, hills and deep valleys, en route to the Chinese-influenced city of Pai. After lunch in a Thai restaurant, you’ll visit Wat Namhoo, containing the sacred Chiang Saen Buddha statue. The topknot of this unusual Buddha opens and contains holy water which is sought after by locals.

Next, you’ll pass tea plantations en route to a Chinese village made from mud houses. Here you’ll taste locally grown teas and learn about the tea-growing process.

Enjoy dinner and spend the night in Pai.

DAY 08 Pai – Mae Hong Sorn (B)

A creepy start to the morning in the huge, echo-filled Tham Lod cave. This ancient burial ground has been carbon dated to 2500 years old, so explore, and watch the birds here swoop through the cave opening.

A different type of cave comes next: the appropriately named Fish Cave to be exact, where thousands of fish, considered sacred, frolic in their natural habitat.

Further into the Mae Hong Son mountains and through the forest, entering what is known as ‘the land of mist’.

After lunch in a local restaurant, hop aboard a river boat for a cruise along the Pai river to visit the exotic Padong Long Neck Hilltribe, who decorate their bodies wearing golden rings around their necks, arms, and legs. Meet the people, learn the meaning of their extreme jewelry, and head back to your new hotel for the night. Fascinating.

DAY 09 Mae Hong Son – Chiang Mai (B)

After breakfast you’ll be whisked to the Myanmar-style temples Wat Jongkam, Wat Hao Wieng and Wat Doi Kong Moo which overlook a beautiful still lake. Don’t miss the spectacular city view from Wat Doi Kong Moo, and spend some time roaming the large outside areas, where huge stone Buddhas and shrines can be seen.

Tuck into a traditional lunch at a local restaurant, before transferring to the airport for a flight back to Chiang Mai.

DAY 10 Chiang Mai (B)

You have today to enjoy Chiang Mai at your leisure. Stroll the city walls, shop in the markets and enjoy the local restaurants of this ancient, fascinating city.

DAY 11 Phuket (B)

You’ll be transferred to Chiang Mai airport for your flight to Phuket Island: your beach-bliss finale.

DAY 12 Phuket (B)

Relax, Phuket-style. Soak up some rays on the beach, snorkel through the clear blue waters, enjoy your hotel or head out to explore the vibrant island independently.

DAY 13 Phuket (B)

DAY 14 Departure (B)

Wave goodbye to Phuket as you are transferred back to the airport.
